Meet the Makers Mini Interview: Beany Bites
/meet the makers of BEANY BITES: CASEY AND GRAEME (& RECIPE TESTER JUDE!)
Beany Bites Mini Interview
Meet Vancouver Island parents Casey and Graeme, the makers behind Beany Bites, nutritious snacks made with little ones in mind. Inspired by their son Jude, Beany Bites started in their family kitchen with a simple mission: to pack plant-based protein and plenty of goodness into a snack kids love. We sat down with co-founder Casey to hear how Jude’s love for their homemade creations sparked the idea for what has grown into a family business!
Share your story with us in 150 words or less.
Beany Bites is just slightly younger than our son, as we started making him snacks when he started solids. We wanted a snack with plant protein that also ticked a bunch of nutrition boxes. In infancy they eat so little volume that every bite is valuable. We designed our smoothie melts so we could rest assured he was getting calories and nutrients even on picky eating days.
We started feeding Beany Bites to Jude when he was around 10 months old, and he’s continued to devour every bite we’ll let him have! His enthusiasm, along with the positive response from his baby friends, gave us the motivation we needed to take Beany Bites from our family kitchen into production for little ones everywhere.
Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?
Probably around the time that we received our first branded packaging and market stand banner. Seeing the logo and artwork we created physically in our hands was a big moment. It was a long road formulating our recipes, so being ready to sell felt like the launching point.
Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?
Right now it's probably our newest smoothie melts flavour: Greens n’ Beans because it's becoming one of our customer's favourites, and is our most nutritious smoothie so far! Organic spinach is the second ingredient by weight - in other words there is a LOT of spinach in them. It took a long time to get the recipe just right, and I was nervous about some of the bold flavours like ginger, but babies have been loving them!
What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?
Definitely the feedback we hear from parents! It's so motivating to keep going knowing how many parents have reached out thanking us for making a well rounded snack that their little ones love. Plus seeing all the babies eating our smoothie melts is incredibly rewarding.
What are your personal top three tips for feeling amazing?
Sleep!! As much as possible with a baby.
Gratitude, especially when it feels hard.
Slowing down with family and friends.
