Munch Mini Interview

Munch co-founder Scott Kreiser is our first Meet The Maker Mini Interview of 2021. For so many of us January is a month to re-focus on health and nutrition—and the great thing is, it seems like every year there are tastier and tastier options out there to help us do that!. Munch definitely fits this bill, with six all-natural nut butters (including Pistachio, Vanilla Almond Latte, and a keto-friendly Macadamia!) that are totally free from any fillers or additives, and totally delicious. Whether you spread these butters on toast, pancakes, fruit… anything that makes it easy to get more nuts into your diet is a really good thing, because nuts are a nutritional powerhouse with tons of protein and healthy fats, plus they’re generally a good source of calcium, magnesium and iron. And because this family run business is based in Port Coquitlam, their products don’t have to travel far to get to us, and to you :)

Share your story with us in a 150 words or less.

Our "Munch Life" began in the summer of 2018 in a small town in Central Alberta. With a new addition to our family (our son) began the search for real foods and a healthier way of living for our family. The idea of starting our own business had been something we wanted to do for a while as an opportunity for our family to be closer together. Our previous careers involved a lot of travel and life on the road. Being avid nut butter fans to begin with combined with our new found passion for natural/plant-based foods led us to creating the line of 6 nut and seed butters we produce today. Wanting to go "all in" on the business we made the decision to move Munch and our family to Abbotsford in the Spring of 2019. We are now operating out of a purpose-built nut butter manufacturing facility of our own in Port Coquitlam.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

I don't think it really sunk in for us until we made the move from working out of shared commercial kitchen spaces to a facility of our own, that was the first "we are really doing this" moment.

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?

The Macadamia Butter is hands down our personal favourite, it is the one we look forward to making the most so we can bring the extra home for a treat. It is also one of the butters that sets us apart from other nut butter companies in the market and of course the taste!

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

Our customers and our kids motivate us the most on a day-to-day basis. We love getting out to the different markets and events and meeting our customers, getting to know the people that make this all possible. It's always so inspiring for us to see the different ways people use our products.

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?

It's too hard to pick just one, we literally went from living in the open prairies enduring cold winters to living at the top of Sumas Mountain so one of our favourite things about living here has to be the weather. We love the outdoors as well and all the hiking, off roading, and other activities available here are a big favourite for us. And of course, all the amazing local and fresh foods available in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley turned us into overnight "foodies".

Describe your ideal Sunday, including your breakfast.

Our typical Sunday morning involves, building Legos, playing board games, and just taking in our young family. The breakfast favourite in our house is almost always pancakes or waffles with one of our delicious nut butters spread or drizzled on top.
