Meet the Makers Mini Interview: Luv The Grub

Luv The Grub Mini Interview

We have a wonderful story to share with you for this month’s Meet the Makers mini interview that shows you how sometimes the most challenging problems can result in beautiful solutions. When Alia Sunderij was teaching a Sustainable Innovation class at Simon Fraser University, one of her students brought the issue of food waste to her attention. She learned that tons of BC produce was being discarded before it had a chance to reach consumers simply for cosmetic reasons. She decided to do something about it and created Luv the Grub, which rescues “ugly” produce just before it would otherwise be tossed out, and transforms it into delicious gourmet chutneys and spreads.

So far Luv the Grub has saved over 20,000 pounds of produce! But they haven’t stopped there on their mission to make a positive impact on their community—the company has also worked with over 40 refugees and New Canadians as part of a paid employment program, and partners with eight local farms . . . and Alia says they’re just getting started!

Share your story with us in 150 words or less.

Luv The Grub is a local Vancouver social business spreading love to people and the planet with delicious chutneys and spreads. We rescue produce from being thrown into the landfill and turn them into gourmet fusion chutneys and spreads through a paid employment training program for newcomer refugees.

Out of all your products, which is your personal favorite and why?

They are all so good in different ways, but my favorite is the Pear Walnut Chutney. It's different and you can't find anything like it on the market. It's also very versatile and so good with cheese.

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

What motivates me is my team and seeing the impact that we have on the people that have walked through the company and seeing their confidence grow.

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live?

I love East Van for all the quaint coffee shops, and local stores.

What are your personal top three tips for feeling amazing?

1. Dance like nobody is watching.

2. Being around amazing people including friends and family.

3.Live your life with purpose and passion.
