We’re delighted to bring you our interview with Gina Arsens, founder and CEO of Vancouver company Yumasoy, maker of Om Noms—those amazingly flavourful, wholesome and scrumptious plant-based meat alternatives. Om Noms was created to help make it easy and convenient to eat a plant-based diet, without giving up taste or compromising your standards for healthy ingredients. With flavours like Mediterranean, Teriyaki, Thai Yellow Curry, and Original (so you can get creative with your own seasonings!:), your taste buds will be very satisfied. Let’s hear how it all began.

Like many families, we aimed to boost our plant-based meals, but the journey was challenging. In the grocery store, the tofu aisle didn't win us over – its taste and texture were unfamiliar. Time constraints ruled out turning it into a gourmet feast. The meat alternative section posed its own issues with ingredients that left me uneasy. Fueled by a mission to simplify plant-based eating, Yumasoy was born, crafting Om Noms, the easy, high-protein, plant-based food.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’? 
Realizing 'this is really happening' hit me at key moments. The initial jolt came with industry support—acknowledgment from distributors, brokers, and grocers, like Pomme Natural Market, who believed in us. Recognition from BC Food & Beverage, landing a spot among the top 10 products of the year within our first year, was another pinch-me moment. The ultimate validation is witnessing consumers savour Om Noms, a feeling that fuels my gratitude for our partners and consumers every day.

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?
Choosing a favorite is tough; each flavor holds a special place. The Original's versatility and the indulgence of Thai Yellow Curry stand out. If pressed, Teriyaki takes the top spot for its unanimous love from my kids. Mediterranean Herb follows closely, not just for its deliciousness but also as a nod to my heritage. Each flavor brings its charm, making the decision nearly impossible!

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?
I'm driven to make healthy eating convenient and delicious. My goal is to empower people to have it all in their food choices – health, convenience, and taste with Om Noms.

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?
Having attended school, built a family, and pursued my career in Vancouver, I cherish the diverse stages of life here. Besides the breathtaking scenery, running into friends from different life stages brings constant joy. I'm always eager to make new connections too.

Describe your ideal Sunday morning, including your breakfast.
My ideal morning kicks off with a smoothie, followed by a scenic walk through the forest or along the ocean with my favorite people. A laid-back afternoon nap and a family dinner complete the perfect day.

What are your personal top three tips for feeling amazing?
Absolutely! Here are my top three tips for feeling amazing: 

  1. Nourish Yourself: Prioritize wholesome meals to fuel your body. 

  2. Prioritize Rest: Ensure a good night's sleep for rejuvenation. 

  3. Stay Connected: Engage with people, explore new ideas, and pursue meaningful goals for an extra layer of positivity in life.
