NutMeg Mylk Mini Interview

We caught up with Megan Wallace of NutMeg Mylks for April’s Meet The Maker interview! As with so many of our amazing local makers, Megan was inspired to create her unique product by her own lifestyle and values. Her journey into crafting super fresh nut mylks started in her own kitchen on BC’s West Coast and though her creations are now shared with the whole region, they’re still made in small, high quality batches. One of the things that has won her mylks so many loyal fans are her delicious (and lovely looking!) flavours like Creamy Brazil Nut - a super creamy mylk with almonds, cashews and Brazil nuts lightly sweetened with vanilla and maple, Blue Coconut - creamy coconut cashew mylk with blue algae, cinnamon and maple, and Silky Cacao - a choclatey blend of almonds, cashews, raw cacao, cinnamon and maple. Read on to learn more about Megan and her fabulous local nut mylks!

As an on-again, off-again vegetarian, I've always opted for dairy-free substitutes, but have never enjoyed the taste, consistency or ingredients used in store-bought nut milks. I fell in love with the taste and health benefits of homemade Nut Milk and began experimenting with different ingredients, flavours, nuts and superfoods and from there, Nutmeg Mylk began.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

I think at our first market was when it really felt real. Also when we received our brand and design that was also really exciting.

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?

It's tough to choose a favourite but I think my personal favourite is our Creamy Brazil Nut Mylk, I love how creamy it is and the nuttyness and health benefits from the brazil nuts. Its neutral flavour goes with everything and it goes really well with coffee in the morning!

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

Our customers. We have such amazing customers who really love our products, when I see and hear how much they love our Mylks it motivates me to continue to push through the hard stuff and pain points of growing and scaling.

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?

I live in North Vancouver but grew up in Squamish yet they both have my favourite things and those are the trails and the outdoors. I love being in nature and both of these places offer quiet moments among the trees and mountains.

What are your personal top three tips for feeling awesome?

1. Move - whether that's a stretch, run, walk or workout

2. Get outside - simply breathing in fresh air always makes me feel better

3. Connect - reach out to a loved one tell them you're grateful for them. Covid has taught me how important that is since physically we've been distant from friends and family for so long.
