MUMGRY Mini Interview

This Meet The Maker Mini Interview is for the mums! And for everyone else who loves having a super nourishing, simple, and really delicious snack on hand! Lilian Umurungi-Jung was inspired to create her line of top quality, wonderfully flavoured, blended nut butters when she found herself struggling to find quick, nutritious snacks during her pregnancy. Now loved by her son, her mom, and legions of loyal fans, MUMGRY can be spread on breads, fruits, used in breakfast bowls and smoothies, or just eaten by the very tasty spoonful! It’s so nice to have the opportunity to introduce you to Lilian so you can learn a little about who she is, and the values she brings to her independent business. It’s also pretty fun to share our first Meet The Maker interview for a local product that’s been publicly supported by none other than… Beyoncé 🐝 . (Really!)

MUMGRY’s inception was derived out of necessity. When I was pregnant with my son Apollo, grocery shopping proved to be quite the challenge as I soon discovered the lack of snacks that encapsulated the dietary restrictions and needs of women during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and beyond. Faced with having to decipher nutritional labels as to whether or not they were good, bad, tasty or rich in nutrients, took the fun out of eating for 2! To overcome this endeavour in finding a delicious snack that supported my health and the growth of my baby, at 3 weeks postpartum, I began “snack prepping” to stay nourished and energized. Homemade healthy snacks became my savior between meals. After a few tasty experiments, MUMGRY was born.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

That transcendent moment was when my Mom bought the first MUMGRY jar from me and told me to keep going!

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?

The MUMGRY Pistachio Chocolate Almond Butter because it’s truly the embodiment of a snack dream come true. It’s the first of its kind and a must-try to fully understand why I’m so partial to it.

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?

It’s a variety of everything the beautiful city of Vancouver has to offer. Cliché as that may sound, considering we are living in a time when travel is limited, Vancouver has shined bright showing its versatility. You look out and see a row of mountains is North, a desert is in another direction, an ocean is around the corner, and forests as tall and deep as the eye can see; all just waiting to be explored. We also have so many creative people and incredible local makers that we admire just within our city limits.

Describe your ideal Sunday, including your breakfast.

It wouldn’t be a Sunday in our household without crepes with MUMGRY! I’ll enjoy any of our three nut butters with a crepe, pancake or waffle to really kick off the day. The morning gastronomic prep will be accompanied by old soul music, filling the room with classics such as “Sunday Kinda Love” by Etta James; moving into more up-tempo tunes from the likes of James Brown and Stevie Wonder. A hike around Lynn Valley, an afternoon of teaching our son something new or a playdate with a friend. We love hosting our friends a lot, too. A nice dinner date with my husband (if we can secure a sitter), a heaping spoon of the pistachio chocolate almond butter on vegan ice cream for dessert at home, an evening with a book or simply time on the couch watching something captivating on Netflix or HBO.

What are your personal top three tips for feeling awesome?

1. Organize the most disorganized thing in your life; whether it’s your spice drawer or even your sock drawer- it will make you feel 1000 times better, instantaneously. I also sometimes just watch Home Edit on Netflix and get joy out of watching other people organize their spaces.
2. Call a friend and reminisce about a nostalgic time you were so fond of together.
3. Eat a spoon of MUMGRY, JK but not kidding. Move around; whether you choose to dance to a song you love or go for a bike ride- movement does wonders!
